Moving is hard. There is so much stuff you need to organise and to get done within a short space of time. It’s really stressful.
How do I know? Well, I just moved interstate for a new job. I don’t know if it was the right decision to move, but I made the move to Brisbane regardless.
By moving I had to give up many opportunities in Melbourne. I had a great job working. I had great opportunities. I loved the potential the job provided me. But I wasn’t happy.
Every day I’d complain about how the people who made the decisions weren’t allowing me to fulfil my potential, largely because I don’t work on Sabbath.
But I would justify staying at my job because I knew that eventually, something would happen. I hoped that one day my boss would look past the issues with working on Sabbath and allow me to be something more.
I was constantly praying for God to show me a path where I could make a serious impact. Where I could show people what I can do with God on my side. And I felt like maybe I was making progress. Like I was finally being a disciple for Him.
But then I was offered a new job, with more money, and doing a job where I could be respected for my ability and still keep the faith. So I had to decide. What did God want me to do? Where would I have the most impact?
I prayed long and hard for a sign from God. I threw out a fleece so to speak, hoping for something to show me what the right choice was. But… nothing. No sign. No miracle moment. No dew on the ground. No real answer as to what God wanted for me.
He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no signwill be given to it.”
Mark 8:12 (NIV)
Sometimes we feel like we need that Gideon moment where we can test God. Where He can show us that He’s there and that He wants us to take that new opportunity, or to make that next decision.
However, God doesn’t always give us the answers directly.
Sometimes He wants us to know that He is with us no matter what path we take.
Often the sign we want Him to show us is simply no sign at all.
To follow blindly or perhaps to trust fully; is what God wants for us. Only then can we be true disciples for Him.
Blind faith puts us in a position to show true, unquestionable loyalty to God.
And after all, isn’t that what faith and discipleship is all about?
