Where am I from?

This question has troubled many people over generations, for Christians, the answer seems obvious. We believe that we were created by an all-powerful and almighty God who has a purpose for us.

If this is the case, why do we still struggle with our identity and finding our purpose in life?

Many of us in considering our identity, look to our ancestry, concluding that who we are is based on our genetic makeup. The truth is, that our genetics play only a small part in shaping who we are as individuals. Genesis 1:27 clearly states that our origin is from God. With this in mind, we should be searching for our identity in God and not within others.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

We limit ourselves when we focus our energy on trying to find who we are in the things of this world; it is only when we look to Christ that we have a true sense of identity and purpose in this life.

As God is the source of our origin, we can be sure that He has created us with everything we need to serve Him. God has blessed us, even before we were born. John 1:12 refers to all those who believe in Him and accept Him as having the right to become children of God.

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

This means that when we are reborn in Christ, He changes our character to align with His purpose, allowing us to unlock our true identity as children of God.

It can be hard to come to terms with the fact that God loves us no matter how sinful we are, and we may even look to our genetics to justify our character flaws, but the good news is God is willing to change us. It is a simple task to ask God to make changes in your life but being prepared to allow God to make you feel uncomfortable for the sake of spiritual growth is the ultimate challenge. God does not leave us unprepared in the search for our true identity, we have access to an unlimited source of power that we can use in times of uncertainty. It is through the teachings of the Bible that we can discover His will for us in our lives.

Therefore, every decision we make should be impacted by our knowledge of who we are in Christ. The understanding of our true identity as children of God will help us to answer the question of where we are from and what our purpose in life is. Matthew 7:7 tells us that if we seek God, we will find Him.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

So, seek God, and you will find yourself along the way.
