Over the weekend it was the World’s Greatest Shave. While we were up at Avondale we were able to witness two beautiful girls participate in the day’s events. We had the privilege to speak to one of the girls, Riverlana Talafua.

She had her whole family come out to witness this sentimental and monumental moment with her. It was an event that got a lot of students’ attention.

  1. Why is the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ so important to you?

I’ve always wanted to shave my head, ever since my nana passed away as a result of leukaemia. But I never had the guts to do it until my mum, was brave enough to do it herself. It is a way that I can still honour my nana and support other individuals and families that have been affected by the same disease.

  1. How much did you aim to raise and how much did you raise?

My goal was $1000, and I raised $1500.

  1. How long have you been growing your hair for this event?

I would say my hair has been growing for about 3 years.

  1. Was it easy to separate from your long locks?

No, it was defiantly not easy. I loved my mane. It was like my statement.

  1. How do your family and friends feel about your big chop?

Although many of my family and friends are sad to see my locks go, everyone is really really supportive.

  1. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who would like to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave next year?

Don’t be afraid because your hair does not define how beautiful you are.
