It was a particularly difficult night of what had already been a terrible week.

It didn’t seem right that I had to suffer this way. I had lived a strict life with a healthy diet and regular exercise regimes. I did all the “right things” and yet my health was still failing me. What else could I possibly do? How was any of this fair?

I cried out to God in anger and exasperation. Like every other time I prayed, I didn’t expect a response. But for the first time in my life I heard a voice.

It wasn’t exactly audible, but the best way to describe it was that I heard a distinct voice talking so clearly in my heart.

A voice asking; “Yes, you suffer and you may not deserve it. But what did I do to deserve what happened to me?”

That one question turned all my years of suffering on its head. Even if my life was what I deemed “great”, I was still a sinner. Even if the worst thing that could happen was to fall upon me, it would still be justified by my transgression of the law.

But our pure and perfect Saviour had the severest extent of punishment for the holiest and most honourable life ever lived.

How was that fair?

You may be suffering today. With sickness, loneliness, grief, heartbreak or any other. It might not seem fair and maybe extremely unjust. Jesus not only understands your pain but physically feels it – EXACTLY in the same way you do. And even if you don’t see its resolution on this earth, He has promised that He will get you through it and you’ll never be alone.

A Jesus who never wept could never wipe away my tears.

Spurgeon

I am eternally thankful for our suffering Saviour who holds my hand through it all.
