The fields are dusty and brown
The hills wear their weary winter frown.
Travelling along this grey stretch of tarmac
My heart reflects the barrenness of this outback.
Hazel smudges fleck the grimy landscape,
Sunlit sand-swirls in the air take shape.
My eyes strain to understand this vision,
My heart is lifeless with indecision.
The herd wanders from patch to patch,
Food from this winter wasteland it must scratch.
Meandering along this lonely road,
My heart is also in survival mode.
A fluffy furry calf alongside his mother gambols,
His joy is evident in this dying dust bowl.
I feel a flutter as I share his frolicking joy,
This promise of new life to my heart God’s envoy.
