This month’s theme of identity got me thinking about the alter ego in Taylor Swift’s new music video ‘The Man.’ The video fascinated me and I have to admit I have now watched it four times. Swift references numerous examples of sexism and misogyny in society as the main character (Tyler Swift) in the video degrades and disregards women, only to be revealed at the end as Taylor Swift herself. She underwent an intensive transformation leaving her unrecognisable and fans in disbelief.
As I went back and watched the video again, knowing the man was Taylor Swift, I could see mannerisms and facial expressions she often displays. After discovering the true identity of ‘the man’ it was hard not to visualise the character (Tyler Swift) as Taylor Swift herself. This made me think about the way people view us as Christians. Sometimes it can be so easy living a double life; of church on Saturday and getting wasted on Saturday night. Chatting about God to your Christian friends and gossiping at work to your mates. Watching wholesome movies at the Pastor’s house and visiting unmentionable websites when you are alone.
But the truth is, just like the character in Swift’s music video, once people know your true identity it is hard to overlook. When people know who you are in Christ you should become an example of who God has called you to be. Jesus speaks very strongly about not sitting on the fence and being lukewarm Christians.
So, because you are lukewarm neither hot nor cold I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Revelation 3:16
If you are struggling with who you are in Christ or don’t know how to submit yourself fully to him. Pray. He is there with open arms ready to catch you and lead you home. You no longer need to keep up two different appearances; only one.
Who you are in Him.
