Pop culture is a key aspect of our society. People form connections and bonds based on what they hear and/or witness, and this can offer a respite from the sometimes depressing news of the world.

With a new year comes new movies and music that we can share and enjoy with loved ones. While not all multimedia items listed below are not explicitly Christian, they share core values with Christianity and open the door for more discussions.

Collated below is a collection of new releases in the coming year.

MOVIES

1. Green Book

The true story of the friendship between Tony Lip and Dr. Don Shirley conveys an important message of acceptance, love and one’s truth. Set in 1962, it reveals the deep racism that existed in the South of America, hinting at issues that still exist today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkZxoko_HC0

2. On the Basis of Sex

Release date: 7th February

This film offers a guiding light for females. The historical piece focuses on Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her early struggles and successes as a lawyer, being a poignant reminder that women did not always have the same freedoms they do now.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28dHbIR_NB4

3. Captain Marvel

In Theatres: 7th March

This movie is to fans of Marvel what ‘Wonder Woman’ was to fans of DC. It is the first Marvel film focused on a female hero – something that is long overdue. Hopefully, it provides an empowering message to young females, that heroes come in all shapes and sizes (and genders). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LHxvxdRnYc

4. Solo

Available on Netflix: 11th January

Think ‘127 Hours’ but Spanish and about a surfer. Based on the true story of a young surfer fighting to survive, and his consequent reflections on his life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV1yuGeULKE

MUSIC
  1. Victory – Bethel Music

Release date: 25th January

Featuring songs like ‘Ain’t No Grave’ and ‘Victory is Yours,’ the album is a joyful reminder of what was won for us when Jesus sacrificed his life for all.

2. Brad Butcher

While he does not have an album announced, the Australian country artist’s chill and soothing tunes are set to go places in 2019, with a tour on the horizon. His song ‘Oh Maria’ from the album ‘From the Bottom of a Well’ features a soft guitar that is immediately calming paired with his unique voice.

  1. Head Above Water – Avril Lavigne

Release date: 15 February

The last time Avril Lavigne released an album was in November of 2013. Our angsty teen selves are thriving with the news of an album to come. The vulnerable lead single of the album came on the back of a personal crisis, which led to Avril praying: “God, please help to keep my head above water.” For those who have ever experienced hardships of any kind (… everyone), her raw lyrics are very relatable.
